Once Ford's 1.5-litre Ecoboost has spread through the range, more Ecoboost three-cyclinder engines will be being sold by the brand than any other format

by Steve Cropley, 26 April 2017

Ford will soon be selling more Ecoboost three-cylinder engines in Europe than any other format, once the new 1.5-litre version, launched in 198bhp form on the new Fiesta ST, spreads through its range.

Ford’s Europe product development chief, Joe Bakaj, has hinted that the engine will go as far up the range as the Mondeo, for which the existing 1.0-litre engine is already used. Although it has been expanded once already, the Ecoboost triple is unlikely to get any bigger, said Bakaj.

“A capacity of 500cc per cylinder is about right for thermal efficiency,” he said. “Besides, we don’t need cars to get more powerful. We need them to get lighter.”

Ford is also about to start selling its new generation of multi-speed automatic transmissions, developed with GM, in Europe. The gearboxes will be used first in the updated Ford Mustang but are coming in the wider range.

The new gearboxes will work especially well in downsized turbocharged engines, Bakaj said. Whereas on step-off a dual-clutch gearbox must depend initially on the nonturbo low-end torque of the engine, the torque converter of the new Ford-GM multispeed gearboxes provides better assistance.

5 Things I Learned Ripping Through the Snow in a 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor

Apr 04, 2017 - 12:18 PM - by AutoGuide.com

I know exactly where the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor was born. I have traversed the exact same course that Ford’s development engineers spent countless hours on thrashing the off-road pickup in an effort to fine tune it.

And I can guarantee you, there isn’t even a little bit of snow.

The Raptor was born in the desert, with one thing in mind: high-speed off-roading, the kind you see in the Baja 500 or the Dakar Rally.

But this truck is offered for sale all across the United States and Canada, where cold, wintery weather is a sad reality. And why should they have to miss out on the epic fun the Raptor offers just because they live where it snows?

All-new 2018 Ford Fiesta ST unveiled with 197bhp in Geneva

Mar 07, 2017 - 4:40 AM - by ST2Focus

New Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch stars at Geneva with new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine. Watch the video.

Ford has revealed a new Fiesta ST hot hatch, based on the upcoming seventh generation version of the supermini. The new ST family member is the firm’s headline act at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

The biggest news is the move to an-all new engine configuration. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo used in the current car is out, replaced by a lightweight, aluminium 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo.

The new motor produces 197bhp. That’s 17bhp up on the standard output of the current Fiesta ST, but equal to its ‘overboost’ figure. Torque swells from 240Nm to 290Nm, and Ford claims that the new Fiesta ST can crack 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds – two tenths quicker than the current generation model and on par with the ST200. A top speed just above 140mph seems likely.

Naturally, the downsized motor will be cleaner and more efficient than the outgoing four-cylinder. Ford reckons CO2 emissions for the new model will tumble from 138g/km to 114g/km, and with cylinder de-activation technology on-board, fuel-economy should improve too.

Speaking to Auto Express last year, Ford’s head of small cars in Europe, Darren Palmer spoke up the prospects of a three-cylinder ST, calling the new engine “promising”.

“It’s a great engine – it sounds brilliant and there’s loads of torque when the turbo comes on boost”.

However, the improvement... [Read More]

The 2018 Ford Fiesta ST Compared to Its Predecessors

The Fiesta is kind of a British car, or it used to be. And there's nothing the Brits like more than a hot hatch. The love affair is going to continue into 2018 with the first 3-cylinder turbo in the Fiesta ST, but it stretches back many decades.

Perhaps the most iconic pocket rocket from the glorious past is the Fiesta XR2. Next to the 200 hp beasts of today, that one could be considered underpowered. From its 1.6-liter CVH engine, it could extract about 100 ponies and 131 Nm of torque. It weighed 839 kg and would do 100 km/h in over 10 seconds.

But it was nimble, and it was fun. Back in the early 2000s, the 4th generation had the Zetec S badge, but almost nobody remembers that one because of how hot the Puma was with its 1.7-liter Yamaha-tuned engine.

Fast forward to 2004, and we have the first Fiesta ST. Inspired by the success of the Focus ST, this supermini borrows a much bigger 2.0-liter engine from the regular Focus, adding ten more horsepower for a total of 150 PS.

It was cheaper but less powerful than the Clio RS of its era. I can still almost hear the popping of a Montune-equipped 190 PS Fiesta ST with racing camshafts and exhaust.

The outgoing generation is arguably the most popular ever. Switching to a 1.6-liter engine, Ford added power and torque and the friskiest handling average Joes could afford.

After yesterday's big reveal, we now know what awaits us in 2018. The third generation of the Fiesta ST will indeed have a three-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo engine. The power has gone up to 200 PS, matching the output of the previous model's overboost function.

Thanks also to the 290 Nm of torque, 0 to 100 km/h... [Read More]
