Weird issue after every fill up

So the last 3 to 4 times I've filled my cars tank up, I'll drive the car for maybe half a mile, come to a stop at a light, and then the RPMs drop and the engine kind of stutters like it wants to die. It recovers and goes back to normal immediately after, but generally it will does this 2-3 times for the first mile or so while the car is stopped. After I drive it for a few minutes the problem is gone completely, or at least until I fill it up again.
The only thing I could think that would do this is water in the tank or a dirty fuel filter? But the car doesnt even have 2000 miles on it yet so I kinda doubt the latter...

Any one else experiencing this?

Yeah, that is a bit strange...

I mean, I guess water in the tank is a possibility since these cars dont have a traditional gas cap... Who knows.
My AFRs are solid though after the hiccups subside. For the whole rest of the tank, the car stalls right arough high 14s low 15s when cruising, and then at idle they are rock solid and barely move at all.

Hey Ive been meaning to question this as it happened once with me while at the pump filling up on 93. I was sitting in my car with it on while it was filling and it stuttered, rpm sunk under idle like it was gonna shut off and I quickly shut the car off. Been waiting for it to happen again but it hasnt.

Mine is consistently after every fill up. At first I thought I was over filling it, but I cut it short this last time and it still happened.

Yeah, mine is constant too.... And when I was under 3k miles, it would stall out twice in a row if I didn't move. I found if I rice around a bit and burn off some of the gas, it doesn't do it. My local Ford dealership told me its maybe a "venting problem" from air trapped from the capless tank (which my bf agreed with cause his Genesis does it too sometimes from air bubbles in the fuel line) but they haven't done anything about it..... I'm almost at 9k now, and it still does it after every fill up...... But it does it less with 93, cause I switched to 93 recently....

Maybe someone with some tuning experience can datalog the first minute after fill up and see what's going on..

Don't add any more fuel after the pump clicks off; on many cars "topping it off" screws up the evaporative emissions system and stalling/hesitation is the result. My son's 2004 X3 would act the same way, but not continuing to fill the tank after the pump clicked off cured the problem.

Colin - I have the exact same issue described by you down to the t. I only have 600 miles on my car so I've only filled it up twice, but both times the RPMs dropped and sputtered (it actually stalled once) immediately after the fill-up. Once I had a couple miles and a few stoplights under my belt the issue was totally gone, until I had to refill the tank.

I'm also no overfilling it. I know for a fact that the dealership put 87 in my first tank when i bought the car, and I filled it up with 91 for the two subsequent tanks. After the first refill, I thought perhaps the ecu had to readjust to the higher octane but since it also happened on my second refill I doubt that's the issue.

help.

Ya ive used 91 every single fill up so I doubt that's the issue. Its pretty safe to say this "issue" is pretty widespread.

Yep same here. Happens again, I'm putting the stock tune back on, driving 50 miles or so to get the ecu calibrated and then making the appointment,

more info regarding this problem...

so I had a 100 mile drive planned today and decided to test a couple of things every 25 miles. I was at about a half-tank left when I started, no problems whatsoever. I filled it up 25 miles later and it stuttered at start-up which makes me think this has nothing to do with the tank being out of gas (since i already had a half tank left). The problem went away a mile later. I added a gallon 25 miles later and turned off hill-assist and it still stuttered at first... sorry boys, hill-assist has nothing to do with this :) . I went to a gas station for the 3rd time 50 miles later and filled it up (hill-assist on), and it again stuttered for a minute. Because this problem is so short-lived after any kind of fill up, whether it's a full tank or just 1 gallon, do we think this could be a problem with the lack of a cap on the fuel-cap? perhaps excessive air getting in? I don't know. But there's definitely something going on with the fuel filling process.

my 2 cents.

Sounds about right. Very odd though. When I get back home from CA I might try to get a gas cap on there and see if that makes any difference

I have also experienced this as well. I put it down to the fact that I had fitted a massive intake kit and it was just sucking the warm engine bay air but now I see it's probably not that.

My theory is that when you put the nozzle into the filler it allows air in which allows regular air to fill the evaporative emissions system and this then gets sucked into the intake?

I too never fill up with the engine running. In fact I dont think anyone at all in England does that unless they have a car they know wont start again when they get back in haha.

Well I tried the hill assist off thing for the hell of it, oddly enough after I did that and I topped off, the car didnt stutter. My friend claims that the one time he filled up and was driving it (we were driving back from CA together) it stuttered, but ever since I have turned the hill assist off I haven't noticed it. And I topped off 4 times coming back to NM..

Nope, I'm to scared since I flashed my car with the AP haha.
My AFRs have been rock solid and I havent thrown a CEL once. So until it gets worse I'm just going to stay with it.

another update.... so it looks like turning off Hill-Assist actually works. So there has to be something wrong with how the ecu is programmed (recall/field action in our future?).

i had previously turned off hill-assist as i was driving away after my fill-up which is why it may not have worked. However for the last two fill ups i've had hill-assist off the entire time, and after neither fill-up did the car stutter. I'm glad the problem is masked, although it's not fixed. For most of you the hill-assist is a nice-to-have which you really don't need, but it sure is convenient for me since I live in San Francisco.

:-/ What do we do now?

I am glad that the issue is resolved by turning off the hill assist, since I don't want hill-assist anyway. So I am not planning on doing anything. For a place with many steep hills like San Francisco, I guess you would need to treat it just like any other vehicle that doesn't have hill assist and use the hand brake if you can't get it in gear quick enough. Or you could leave the hill assist on and give it some more gas if its stuttering right after a fill up.
